St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care: Advances in Alzheimer’s Research is Focus of Science Cafe at St. Ann Center

Free event includes expert presentation, discussion

The future of Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and treatment will be discussed at this month’s Science Café—a free speaker series at St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care-Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Avenue. The presentation and community discussion is set for Tuesday, July 25, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., and is sponsored by the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Clinical & Translational Science Institute.

The discussion will be led by the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Dr. Piero Antuono MD, professor of neurology and director of the Dementia Research Center, and Julie Grassel, MSNED, BSN, RN, a clinical research nurse. They will give an overview of how Alzheimer’s disease differs from normal aging and look at studies of lifestyles and risk for dementia. Also discussed will be refinements in Alzheimer’s diagnosis by measuring biomarkers with lab and imaging testing, and the recent trials with vaccines against memory loss currently taking place in Milwaukee and Madison. The role of community advocacy and how it can help fund continued Alzheimer’s research will also be highlighted.

This program is part of a monthly series, held the last Tuesday of each month, exploring a variety of health topics. It’s open to the public, and health professionals can get Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit for attending.

Light refreshments will be served.
