Spring is the Season of Blossoms in Door County Every spring, Wisconsin’s Door County bursts into bloom with thousands of acres of white cherry blossoms, colorful displays of daffodils or tulips and quiet forests carpeted with wildflowers. Correspondingly, areas across the peninsula come alive with a variety of events and special seasonal lodging packages known collectively as the Season of Blossoms.
Headlining everything is the arrival of the peninsula’s renowned cherry blossoms. Door County’s 2,500 plus acres of cherry orchards typically begin blooming in mid-May across southern sections of the 70-mile peninsula, with blossoms spreading northward about 10 miles per day. For more than two decades, residents and businesses here have added to the floral fireworks by planting more than 2.3 million daffodil and tulip bulbs in public displays and personal gardens. Mother Nature complements these human plantings by spreading a colorful blanket of native trillium, orchids and other wildflowers through open meadows and forests.
Guests are welcomed to this visual feast with the Door County Season of Blossoms promotion. From April 9 to June 5 many of the county’s finest inns, resorts and B&B’s will offer special lodging packages with value-added items such as gift baskets, dinners for two, winery tours, massages and more. As an added bonus, guests get a $25 Door County Gift Certificate upon check-in with any lodging package. Spring visitor opportunities in Door County also include 11 historic lighthouses; a variety of cooking classes; wine sampling at the eight wineries along the Door County Wine Trail; or stops at the four local craft breweries and cideries. The arts also come alive in spring, with more than 100 art galleries and studios, award-winning professional theater, and multiple live music venues, including the four-day Steel Bridge Songfest on June 9-12 in Sturgeon Bay. Golfers can work the early season kinks out on 11 different courses, while hikers and bikers can explore the county’s five state parks and 19 county parks — or take part in popular events like the Door County Half-Marathon on May 7 and several community festivals over Memorial Day weekend.
