Bret Woodland named to Top 20 Under 40 by ENR Midwest

H.J. Martin and Son project manager recognized for work with national retailers

Green Bay, Wis. – Bret Woodland, a project manager at H.J. Martin and Son since October 2012, has been named to the Top 20 Under 40 list of ENR Midwest for 2016. The annual award of Engineering News-Record regional editions recognizes the excellence of young construction professionals.

Woodland, who turns 38 on Feb. 16, works with some of the most recognized retailers in the U.S., overseeing in-store conversion projects. Approximately 1,900 retail locations nationwide have been completed under his direction over the past four years. The contributions of Woodland have helped H.J. Martin and Son become the country’s 179th largest specialty contractor, as measured in the 2015 ENR Top 600.

The in-store conversions he directs often are done within an open-store environment, on aggressive schedules to return store operations to normal ASAP, and use small crews which work simultaneously at multiple locations across a wide geographic area. Throughout all of these projects, Woodland leads remote employees and adeptly manages spur-of-the-moment situations that arise hundreds of miles from his office.

An independent panel of ENR Midwest judges drawn from construction industry leaders reviewed the 56 nominations based on professional accomplishments, leadership skills and community service. The candidate pool included engineers, architects, planners and estimators from the Midwest states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

This year’s honorees are featured in the Feb. 1, 2016, edition of ENR Midwest. Engineering News-Record reports on the top design firms and construction companies, along with major projects, in the United States.

“We are excited for Bret to receive this wonderful recognition from a coverage leader of the construction industry nationally,” says Edward Martin, president and CEO of H.J. Martin and Son. “Bret’s attitude, work ethic and customer service have greatly contributed to our success.”

Before joining H.J. Martin and Son, Woodland spent 11.5 years with Mortenson Construction, a national construction and development services company. His project portfolio at Mortenson included the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee; the Wells Fargo Skywalk Bridges in Des Moines, Iowa; the Smoky Hills Wind Project Phase II in Lincoln, Kan.; the James I. Swenson Science Building in Duluth, Minn.; the St. Paul (Minn.) Union Depot; and the Aurora Grafton (Wis.) Medical Center.

Woodland graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 2001 with a B.S. degree in construction management. A native of Oshkosh, Wis., he and his wife Mandy have three children. Woodland is an active member of The Family Church in Neenah, Wis., and has served as Church Council Chair since 2014.
