Port and Resource Recovery Department: Port of Green Bay season isn’t over yet

(Green Bay, WI) – We may be in a new year, but the 2015 shipping season is still going for the Port of Green Bay. The Port is expecting a ship this week carrying salt from Goderich, Ontario to Fox River Dock.

“Our season really depends on ice conditions rather than the calendar,” said Dean Haen, Director for the Brown County Port and Resource Recovery department. “We experienced a very mild start to the winter so it has taken longer for ice to form on the Great Lakes. So if ships can still get through and the demand is there, then we’ll take them.”

Haen noted that the longer season will help make up for slower months the port experienced during the summer. “We did experience some shortfalls in cargo, but are confident the longer season will help us reach the season goal of moving 2 million metric tons of materials through the Port.”

This is the third longest season in recent Port history. The last ship to reach port for the 2005 shipping season arrived on January 21, 2006, while the 2006 shipping season closed on January 15, 2007.
