Improving Public School Facilities Without a Referendum
Hoffman partners with Kimberly Schools to share their experiences with others
(Appleton, WI) – For most public school districts, building improvements only occur after getting approval from district residents through a referendum. But that’s not the only way to go.
Sam Statz and Catherine Cruickshank of Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction Inc. will be joined by Kimberly Area School District Superintendent Robert Mayfield for the presentation, “Offering Your Community More Without a Referendum,” at the
95th Wisconsin State Education Convention. The three-day convention takes place January 20-22, 2016, at the Wisconsin Center, Milwaukee.
“More and more school districts, particularly in smaller communities, have facilities that serve the entire community,” Statz said. “Most districts consider a referendum the only way to provide enhanced facilities. But that doesn’t have to be the case.”
Statz and Mayfield say the Kimberly Area School District is an excellent example of this new, progressive way of thinking. Kimberly has been able to renovate a former private school into a 4K Center for Literacy, transform their existing middle school library into a collaborative 21st century learning space, and create a district-only Health & Wellness Center for staff and their families. The session will review the research Kimberly conducted, how the district executed their plan with Hoffman, and the results they are seeing.
“Working closely with Hoffman, we were able to move forward with these important building enhancements without going to a referendum for funding,” Mayfield said. “Even with tight budgets, it’s possible to make improvements with the right planning.”
Hoffman is an industry leader in sustainable design and construction and has worked with Kimberly and more than 55 other school districts, private schools and charter schools throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
The Wisconsin State Education Convention brings together hundreds of school leaders each year to foster effective school board practices for student success through workshops and other education programs.
The Hoffman – Kimberly joint session is scheduled for 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 21.
