Company Shares Shipper Best Practices, Tips for Greening Up Supply Chains

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Start with a fleet traveling a mind-boggling 10 million miles each day. Add a 35-plus-year track record of investing in equipment, processes and technology to run one of the most energy-efficient fleets in the industry. Top it off with being named a six-time EPA SmartWay Awards of Excellence winner and it’s easy to understand why the transportation, intermodal and logistics company known for orange has proven it also has an affinity for another color: Green.

Schneider was recently recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for outstanding environmental performance and proven efficiency of freight management operations with a SmartWay Excellence Award. Reserved for the top 2 percent of SmartWay’s 3,000 members, it is the EPA’s highest recognition for organizations that significantly reduce the environmental impacts of the freight sector.

A charter member of the EPA’s voluntary SmartWay program, Schneider exceeded the EPA’s 2014 fuel reduction and environmental performance goals to earn the recognition, with a 22 percent reduction in carbon dioxide, 39 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide and 30 percent reduction in particulate matter year-over-year.

“The EPA is pleased to honor Schneider with a 2015 Excellence Award,” said Chris Grundler, director, EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality. “SmartWay carriers work diligently to bring our families the goods we need each day, while contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future for our children.”

According to Steve Matheys, Schneider’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer, the company recognized decades ago that putting a business focus on investing in technology and practices to conserve fuel and reduce emissions was good for everyone in the supply chain. “We all expect that careful attention is being given to ensuring that what we buy and what companies produce don’t have an adverse affect on the world around us. When it comes to the supply chain, shippers can greatly reduce their carbon footprint by selecting green transportation carriers. The greener the carrier, the greener the shipper and the supply chain overall.”

To help shippers make the business case for working with green carriers, Schneider’s white paper “A Sustainable Future: Why Your Supply Chain Needs to Go Green or Go Home” offers guidance.

“Schneider invests millions of dollars each year in the testing and implementation of emerging green technologies and driver training because it makes good sense for our customers, our business and the environment,” added Matheys.

Knowing what qualifications to look for when searching for a green carrier is important. Shippers interested in learning how to choose a transportation provider committed to environmental conservation can read more in Schneider’s recent white paper “A Sustainable Future: How to Choose a Transportation Supplier That Shares Your Commitment to Environmental Conservation,” which details a two-step process shippers can implement to move toward a greener future.

Schneider was a founding member of the SmartWay Transport Partnership in 2004. It joined forces with the EPA and other businesses committed to improving efficiency and freight supply chain sustainability by reducing its impact on the environment. Since the program’s inception, Schneider and its fellow SmartWay partners have saved a total of 144.3 million barrels of oil and 20.6 billion dollars in fuel costs, while reducing carbon dioxide by 61.7 million metric tons, particulate matter by 43,000 tons and nitrogen oxide by 1,070,000 tons.
