Event at UW-Milwaukee exposes students to college
and career opportunities; helps them plan for success

MILWAUKEE – More than 2,600 students from 34 Milwaukee Public Schools’ middle and high schools will attend a special college and resource fair designed to provide them with information to make good post-secondary choices. The 9th annual Fresh Coast Classic College & Resource Fair will take place Thursday, November 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Student Union.

The Fresh Coast Classic College & Resource Fair is also celebrating several firsts this year: 100 students from the Wauwatosa School District will attend the college fair and MPS students with special needs will receive information and support on successfully transitioning from high school to the world of work or post-secondary education. Also new this year is a TEAM UP Go Center, an on-site mobile College Access Center students can use for basic information on college and careers. MPS has two regional College Access Centers – 27th and Center and 27th and Morgan – which have provided more than 8,000 students with advice and support as they navigate the sometimes complex college application and financial aid processes.

“The Fresh Coast Classic College & Resource Fair is just one example of how we’re redefining the MPS experience for our students,” stated MPS Superintendent Darienne B. Driver. “Working with more than 55 colleges, universities, technical programs and other supportive partners, our students are able to learn firsthand how to prepare for success after high school. We are grateful for yet another example of how our community is becoming more involved and committed to improving student outcomes in MPS.”

In addition to visiting the resource fair, students can also attend specialized workshops tailored to helping them prepare for post-secondary success. Workshop topics include information on financial aid, scholarships, technical schools and apprenticeships, and military service.

The event also provides an opportunity to recognize five MPS students who are receiving MPS TEAM UP scholarships. The student scholars will be introduced at a news conference at 2:00 p.m. at the UWM Student Union Fireside Lounge. Featured speakers include Barry Mandel of the Mandel Group, which is a Gold/Presenting Sponsor of the Fresh Coast Classic, MPS Superintendent Driver and Milwaukee Alderman Willie Wade.

In addition to the Gold/Presenting Sponsorships of the Barry Mandel Group and Harley-Davidson, Premium Sponsors include: Direct Supply;Gruber Law Office; Midwest Orthopedic/Wheaton Franciscan Health; University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; We Energies; and Gorman and Company. General Sponsors are: Metro PCS Wireless; Community Financial Services; Voya Financial; McDonald’s; Gonzales, Saggio and Harlan LLP; Salvation Army; and Harris and Harris.
