As part of its continuing effort to encourage in-depth analysis of the most important issues of the day, the Milwaukee Press Club is pleased to present its next Behind the Headlines topic:
Milwaukee: the next Research Hub?
Milwaukee has established itself as a leader in water research and technology, but what else can or is being done to make Milwaukee a research “hub?” The panel will discuss efforts to secure additional funding for research, breakthroughs that could drive additional research in the region and the economic impact on our local economy. Is it realistic to think Milwaukee will become the next big research hub?
What: Three distinguished education and research leaders will face a panel of journalists to talk about the efforts to make Milwaukee a research hub.
When: Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, lunch included.
(Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and program goes from 12 noon to 1:30 PM.)
Where: Foley & Lardner LLP, 40th Floor, US Bank Building, 777 E. Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee.
The event is open to the public.
The education leaders include:
• Mark Mone, Ph. D., is chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Mone was named chancellor of UWM in December 2014. A Professor of Management in the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Lubar School of Business, Mone also served UWM as the Chancellor’s Designee for Strategic Planning and Campus Climate from 2011-2014. In that role, he worked with the campus’ senior leadership, governance groups, and all stakeholders to develop UWM’s 2020 strategic plan, and campus-level programs to improve the organizational climate.
• Kris Ropella, Ph. D., is Opus Dean of the Opus College of Engineering and professor of biomedical engineering at Marquette University. She joined the biomedical engineering faculty at Marquette in 1990 and served as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering from 2004 to 2013. Ropella is recognized internationally for her research and teaching expertise in biosignal processing and medical imaging for diagnostic medical devices. She will oversee Marquette’s planned athletic performance research center.
• Dr. Ann Nattinger, senior associate dean for research at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Nattinger is a nationally recognized cancer health services researcher. She was recently appointed to her position after leading the Medical College’s division of general internal medicine. Under her leadership, the division expanded its research productivity, with faculty members conducting research funded by $10 million of annual NIH support as of 2014. As the founding director of the center for patient care and outcomes research, which was created in 2000, Dr. Nattinger has grown the level of grant-funded research by the center’s affiliated faculty to a value of $50 million.
