TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE NON PROFIT KICKS OFF JOURNEY IN MILWAUKEE
Join Onwards, a new Milwaukee based, travel with purpose, non profit, for its Milwaukee launch party on September 10th at VAR Gallery (643 S 2nd Street Milwaukee ) 7-9pm. Onwards alleviates poverty by supporting entrepreneurs and creating unique travel connections in developing countries. The event is open to the public, will share about the organization’s unique approach, and just might inspire your next adventure.

Onwards was born out of a desire to find better solutions to international aid. Failed aid efforts are making headlines; volunteer tourism, handouts, and unsustainable programs have, more often than not, fallen short of true impact.
The organization is working to use the largest industry in the world, tourism, as a powerful tool to address global poverty. Onwards supports tourism based microenterprise development. That is, the organization provides loans, training, and revenue for businesses such as guide organizations, restaurants, small hotels, anything that can benefit from community based tourism. Then they create trips to these businesses that provide immersive travel experiences where dollars are going to support community development and ultimately help alleviate poverty.
Onwards has piloted trips to the Dominican Republic and Haiti and is currently fundraising to support more entrepreneurs and expand trip operations. Their last trip supported Raquel Hilario Santos, living in La Cumbre Dominican Republic, who started a small B&B in her community. Travelers made a unique personal connection in this home-stay like environment and spent their days jumping off waterfalls, visiting amber mines, and immersing themselves in the local culture.
