MADISON, Wis. – Now that summer has begun and the Fourth of July holiday weekend is coming soon, many of us are planning on being around rivers and dams. Warmer temperatures make rivers even more inviting for fishing, boating and swimming. However, they can also mean higher river flows due to prior snow melt and the continuing rains we have been experiencing.

These river flows are reminders of how strong the forces of nature can be and how important it is to stay safe when you are involved in recreational activities around rivers and dams. Alliant Energy wants everyone to be safe in their recreational activities this summer and throughout the boating and fishing seasons. Many of the accidents and fatalities that occur near rivers and dams could be prevented by using common sense, practicing safety and understanding the dangers of water.

Alliant Energy urges people to take these and other precautions to stay safe on rivers and near dams:

· Always wear your life jacket when you are in, on or around a river.

· Understand the dangers near dams and obey all warning devices.

· Do not overestimate your swimming ability. Swimming becomes more difficult with increased current and water depth. Even the strongest of swimmers should be extremely cautious.

· Keep your boat motor running when near a dam so you can quickly leave or maneuver.

· Wear shoes to protect against glass and rocks and know that river rocks can be very slippery.

· Never anchor boats below a dam because water levels can change quickly.

· Look out for fast-moving currents, waves and rapids, even in shallow water.

· Stay clear of the dam spill area where unpredictable water conditions make boat control difficult.

· Stay sober when on or in the water. Alcohol and other drugs can impair your judgment and put you at risk for an accident.

· Stay away from sloping edges and overhanging banks that can easily break off.

· Keep a close eye on the weather and bring a radio with you.

· Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return and where to call if you don’t.

· Bring a cell phone and call 911 in an emergency.

Alliant Energy wants anglers, boaters, outdoor enthusiasts and visitors to enjoy the many exceptional recreation resources to be found on rivers and around dams in the region. People are urged to practice safe use of the areas so that they can be enjoyed over and over again. Alliant Energy operates two hydroelectric facilities on the Wisconsin River.
