What, when, and why?
Thursday, March 26, 2015, Wisconsin college students and their supporters from across the state are scheduled to meet with their hometown legislators in the Capitol in Madison.
Their purpose is to support state student financial aid for all Wisconsin students attending a Wisconsin private, nonprofit college or university. Thursday’s effort, the sixth biennial WAICU Students’ Day, is part of a larger campaign entitled the Power of Financial Aid (PFA) sponsored by the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (WAICU), the United Council of UW Students, WTCS Wisconsin Student Government, and the Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association.
Currently, 116,000 Wisconsin citizens at the University of Wisconsin, a technical college, or a private, nonprofit college receive aid to attend a Wisconsin college or university. But over 48,000 fully qualified Wisconsin students have been turned away because of inadequate funding. Because college graduates generally earn more and are more likely to be employed, they make fewer demands for government services such as unemployment compensation and healthcare. They also will contribute 80 percent more in taxes over their lifetime than those without a college degree.
