Lutheran Life Communities partners with Hoffman for national projects

(Appleton, WI) Nationally-recognized and Illinois-based senior living provider Lutheran Life Communities has selected Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. in Appleton, Wisconsin, to design two of its key senior living campus facilities—Lutheran Home’s Olson Pavilion in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and The Arlington of Naples, Florida.

The Arlington Heights project is a $50 million repositioning of the organization’s original campus, Lutheran Home, and features the expansion and renovation of its skilled nursing facility, Olson Pavilion. “Lutheran Life Communities determined that the facilities at the Lutheran Home campus needed to adapt to more effectively and efficiently serve multiple levels of resident needs, including home-like care and hospitality settings,” stated Randy Bremhorst, project principal with Hoffman. “The repositioning will allow Lutheran Life Communities to offer the latest in health care innovation to the residents of Arlington Heights and neighboring communities.”

The 81,000 sq. ft. west wing expansion to Olson Pavilion, the project’s first phase which was completed in May 2014, includes 78 resident units, neighborhood spaces for dining and socializing, and features a state-of-the-art rehabilitation and therapy gym.

The remainder of the project focuses on the renovation of the existing Olson Pavilion—specifically the reconfiguring of the current 252 beds with shared toilet rooms down to 162 private rooms with private baths and showers—and the transformation from a medical model facility to a person-centered household care model. The renovation will occur in two phases with construction expected to be complete in spring of 2016.

Hoffman was also tabbed to design and provide owners representative/development management services for The Arlington, a 550,000 sq. ft. continuing care retirement community (CCRC) located at Lely Resort in Naples, Florida. The Arlington offers residents comfortable and safe living in a resort-style environment. “The Arlington of Naples was designed to be a world-class community, as is evident by its upscale amenities which include a full-service wellness and fitness center with indoor pool and spa, fine and casual dining venues, a marketplace, chapel, spa services, banking services, and a cinema,” said Bremhorst.

Phase I of the 38-acre campus features upscale villas, 132 independent living apartments, and a healthcare center comprised of 42 assisted living apartments, 37 memory support units and 44 skilled nursing units. According to Bremhorst, “The Arlington is the largest CCRC coming online in the country.”

Construction of The Arlington is expected to be complete by late July of 2015.

Although the projects are different, Bremhorst says there is a common thread. “Both campuses were designed with a person-centered approach to care in mind,” said Bremhorst. “There is definitely a growing understanding and appreciation nationally for the positive effect the physical environment can have on a resident’s health and well-being.”

Hoffman has been assisting senior care providers in strengthening their organizations for more than 30 years. Recent senior living facility achievements include completing the first project in Wisconsin using the Property Incentive Program; completing the first project in Wisconsin using the Green House model; and earning two Citation of Merit awards from DESIGN | Environments for Aging, a national long-term and senior care design competition.
