Dr. Scott Flanagan, Ed.D. to Become 7th President

Madison, Wis. (March 25, 2014) – The Board of Trustees of Edgewood College announced today that Dr. Scott Flanagan will serve as the 7th president of Edgewood College. Flanagan, who most recently served as Executive Vice President, has been with Edgewood College for the past 16 years. He will replace Dr. Dan Carey who will retire in August 2014 after 10 years of service to the College.

“I am deeply grateful for the faith that the Board and this community have placed in me to lead Edgewood College,” Flanagan said. “We can take great pride in the institution that we’ve become, and our best days remain before us. With our students, faculty, staff and Board leadership, we are poised to build on our recent successes and reach even greater heights. Edgewood College’s mission to build a just and compassionate world through educating students has never been more important, and it is my privilege to be invited to serve as its President.”

“Scott has prepared himself to be a highly effective college president,” President Dan Carey said. “I’m thrilled that his leadership will be at Edgewood College. His breadth of experience here means he is ready to hit the ground running on day one. Scott’s professional experience and personal values are a perfect match with our Dominican liberal arts college.”

“Dr. Flanagan enjoys the full support of the entire Board of Trustees, and is ready to carry a great tradition forward,” Chairman Jim Barr said. “Our students and the families we serve, and will serve in the future, will benefit from his extraordinary vision and leadership.”

“Our search for the next president was both nationwide in its scope, and very much informed by our own community of learners,” said Jan Eddy, Chair of the Presidential Search Committee. “In listening sessions on campus, we identified the needs of the College going forward. At the end of the search, it became clear that Dr. Flanagan is the best prepared, and the best qualified to step into that critical leadership position.”

At Edgewood College, Dr. Flanagan’s roles have included Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, Vice President for Planning & Enrollment and interim Chief Financial Officer. In addition, he has regularly taught a doctoral course in Higher Education Finance.

Dr. Flanagan previously served as Director of Admissions, Director of Athletics, and Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Services at the University of Saint Francis, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., where freshman classes tripled during his five years of leadership.

He has been a frequent presenter at national conferences on trends in higher education, strategic planning, enrollment management, leadership, and change management. He has also served as a consultant in the areas of enrollment management and strategic planning.

While a member of the Oregon, Wis. Board of Education, Dr. Flanagan was a key contributor to Accountability for Student Achievement, a policy paper which received recognition from the National Association of School Boards. Flanagan currently serves on the board of the Urban League of Greater Madison, and recently served as a member of the Commission on Financial Aid Consolidation and Modernization, created to improve financial aid in Wisconsin.

Flanagan holds a doctorate in Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania, where his dissertation, Reconciling Values during General Education Revision at Three Catholic Universities, was recognized with distinction. He earned an M.B.A. from the University of Saint Francis, and is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with an undergraduate degree in political science.
