9th annual Du Run Run fosters fitness, camaraderie for special cause
MADISON, Wis. — More than 150 area kids, ages 2 through10, geared up and broke a sweat by competing in the Summit Credit Union Du Run Run on Sun., Aug. 15 to raise $8,641 for Special Olympics Wisconsin.
Kids ran, biked and then ran again in support of the more than 1,600 athletes with cognitive disabilities in the Madison area. Medals were presented to the first, second and third place finishers in each age group.
“The Du Run Run began in Fitchburg nine years ago and has since then become one of our flagship fundraising events, providing support to and enhancing opportunities for the Special Olympic athletes in the Madison area,” said John Weichelt, Regional Director of Development for Special Olympics Wisconsin. “Thanks to our partnership with and the support we receive from Summit Credit Union, we are able to help many adults and children with cognitive disabilities realize their true potential and reach their dreams.”

History of DuRunRun:
The statewide fundraiser was created by IronMan competitor and Fitchburg resident, Brendan Connelly, along with his wife Nancy, as a way to promote fun and general physical fitness among local youth. The duathlon began in 2001 at McKee Farms Park in Fitchburg with 126 participants. Sponsored by American Family Insurance, the Du Run Run is held in Fitchburg and La Crosse, Wis., and has raised more than $80,000 for Special Olympics.
