Growing Power: To announce details of international Urban & Small Farm Conference

WHAT: Growing Power will announce the largest farm conference of its kind to be held Sept. 10-12 at State Fair Park in West Allis. The first annual National-International Urban & Small Farm Conference, expected to draw thousands of visitors from around the world, will bring together a diverse audience of not only those interested in urban agriculture and sustainable farming practices, but those who can help bring Good Food to the table. Urban planners, city officials, physicians, educators, nutritionists, corporate executives, university officials and social justice activists will join small and urban farmers at the event.

MacArthur Fellow Will Allen, recently named one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People, has become recognized as among the preeminent thinkers on agriculture and food policy. Allen is founder of Growing Power and will be speaking at the media conference.

Allen will be joined at the conference by a representative from Bonterra Wines, a conference sponsor. Maggie Peak, marketing manager at Bonterra, will be announcing Bonterra Wines’ “Campaign for Urban Farming”, an initiative involving Growing Power which will help raise awareness and promote urban farming in 13 communities across the country.

In addition, representatives from We Energies and Focus on Energy will be presenting a check for $26,760 to Growing Power for the installation of a solar photovoltaic array. The solar array is producing renewable electricity from the sun’s energy to help Growing Power’s production of vegetables, fish and other products.
