GLIDDEN – Governor Jim Doyle today announced a $247,920 grant for Ashland County to renovate the Lauri Jean Zach Center. The Lauri Jean Zach Center houses a senior center and a place for developmentally disabled adults. The grant funding comes from the Community Development Block Grant-American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) program, overseen by the Department of Commerce. Commerce Secretary Aaron Olver made the announcement today in Glidden as part of Governor Doyle’s eighth annual Up North tour.

“I am proud that we are putting Recovery Act dollars to work in Ashland County by investing in this great community center,” Governor Doyle said. “The investments we are making in the Lauri Jean Zach Center make good sense economically, and will make Ashland an even better place to live, work and raise a family.”

Built in 1980, the Lauri Jean Zach Center was named for a young girl with disabilities. It houses a nutrition center, a senior center, and a workplace for developmentally disabled adults. The funds will be used to renovate the facility, making it ADA-compliant, replacing the roof, and updating the HVAC system.

This project builds on Governor Doyle’s efforts to position Wisconsin for future growth. Since taking office in 2003, Governor Doyle has worked aggressively to create and retain jobs in Wisconsin. Governor Doyle’s budget last year created some of the strongest economic development tools in the nation to help businesses create jobs and get people back to work. Wisconsin now has powerful new tax credits to help manufacturers create and retain jobs, new tools to help investors create start-ups, and new incentives to spur research and development.
