(JANESVILLE, Wis.)—A coalition of businesses, citizens and elected officials in South-central Wisconsin today is commending Gov. Jim Doyle’s decision to convene a meeting of the Transportation Projects Commission (TPC) this fall to consider the expansion of Interstate 39/90 between Beloit and Madison.

“This project is critical for economic development, safety and mobility not only for communities in the Stateline area, but for the entire state of Wisconsin given its role as a key commerce corridor,” Dan Cunningham, vice president of government relations for Forward Janesville, Inc., and spokesman for the I-39/90 NOW Coalition, said.

Cunningham praised the efforts of Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan (D-Janesville) for his leadership role in promoting the project and working with the Doyle administration in organizing a meeting of the TPC, which must recommend the project in order for it to receive “enumeration” by the Legislature in the next state budget.

“The Governor’s decision to call a meeting of the commission will ensure that the state takes the necessary steps to prioritize its most important infrastructure projects and responsibly use existing program funding to make long-term investment decisions in a way that creates jobs and promotes safety,” Cunningham said.

He said the Coalition’s efforts in the upcoming months will focus on educating local businesses, citizens and civic organizations about the project in preparation for this fall’s TPC hearing.
