2010 R&D 100 AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Experts, editors pick top high technology innovations of the year

MADISON, WI – The editors of R&D Magazine have announced the winners of the 48th Annual R&D 100 Awards, which salute the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year. A full list of this year’s winners is available at http://www.rdmag.com.

NorthStar Engineered Technologies, LLC, a Limited Liability Corporation founded by NorthStar Growth Partners, LLC whose home office is in Madison with auxiliary offices in Janesville, WI and Naperville, IL, submitted their Automated Radionuclide Separator System – Environmental (ARSIIe) for consideration for this year’s award and were notified the ARSIIe was chosen to receive one of the coveted 100 awards this year.

The ARSIIe revolutionizes how radiochemical separation can be done in either a fixed-base laboratory or in a field laboratory. It is truly a new approach to this type of separation as it finally provides a “radiochemist in a box” for support of radioanalytical determination needs whether in a routine setting or in an emergency response setting such as a nuclear event – whether accidental or terrorist related.

The ARSIIe is a microprocessor based architecture connected to a standard computer which was developed for the environmental industry. “It’s an automated chromatography system based on the patent work done by PG Research Foundation (Lisle, IL) but tailored and dedicated to this application” states Glenn Isensee, CTO. A similar instrument based upon the same patent work is marketed by NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes, LLC (a related company also founded by NorthStar Growth Partners, LLC) that can be used by a nuclear technician or pharmacist to quickly and efficiently prepare high purity radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine. NorthStar’s development team required expertise in chemistry, automation, microcomputers, radiochemistry, computer control, and database management.

George P. Messina, the Company’s President & CEO stated that “We at NorthStar along with our technology partners are pleased and honored to receive this prestigious award, which has become a hallmark of determining what technologies represent the best technology developed in the world every year.”

Dr. James T Harvey, NorthStar Chief Science Officer stated “The patented technology employed in the ARSIIe has many applications and in a separate design effort completed by NorthStar Medical Radioisotopes, LLC the core technology licensed by NorthStar Growth Partners, LLC is being deployed in its TechneGen product offering The TechneGen will resolve a significant medical crisis – the shortage of Molybdenum-99 and its daughter Technitium-99m which is used in over 30,000 nuclear imaging tests per day in the United States.”

The R&D 100 Awards have long been a benchmark of excellence for industry sectors as diverse as telecommunications, high-energy physics, software, manufacturing, and biotechnology. For industry leaders, government labs, and academic institutions, the awards can be vital for gauging their efforts at commercialization of emerging technologies. And in winning an R&D 100 Award, developers often find the push their product needs to find success in the marketplace.

“The R&D 100 Awards have always represented some of the most innovative concepts to reach the marketplace in the past year. 2010 is no exception, and we had a particularly strong field of entries for the judges to evaluate,” said Rita Peters, editorial director of R&D Magazine.

Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have identified revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market. Many of these have become household names, helping shape everyday life for many Americans. These include the flashcube (1965), the automated teller machine (1973), the halogen lamp (1974), the fax machine (1975), the liquid crystal display (1980), the Kodak Photo CD (1991), the Nicoderm anti-smoking patch (1992), Taxol anticancer drug (1993), lab on a chip (1996), and HDTV (1998). Familiar industry names such as IBM, Frito Lay, Siemens, Intel Corp., and Toyota also won awards this year for products ranging from biodegradable packaging to drive management systems for next-generation automobiles. Innovation was also strong from high-profile government and academic laboratories including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory. They won awards for technologies including nanostructured batteries and safety systems for airports of the future.

Winners of the R&D 100 Awards are selected by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine. The publication and its online portal serve research scientists, engineers, and other technical staff members at high tech industrial companies and public and private laboratories around the world.
