Project Designed and Built by Hoffman LLC Includes Wisconsin’s First Green House® Homes

Appleton, Wis. — Lutheran Homes of Oshkosh (LHO) will celebrate the opening of their new 77-acre campus, Eden Meadows, on Sunday, July 18, with an open house from 10am – 3pm and a special dedication ceremony at 2pm. The campus is located on Witzel Avenue, west of Hwy 41, between Oakwood Road and Clairville Road in Oshkosh.

Committed to providing quality care and life-enriching opportunities to the aging and those in need in the Oshkosh area, LHO’s new campus includes Eden Rehabilitation Suites, a state-of-the-art, 30-bed skilled nursing facility for short-term rehabilitation, and two, 10-bed Eden Green House® Homes—the first such facilities in Wisconsin.

The Green House model, which provides a person-centered approach to skilled nursing care in a small, intentional community, is designed to de-institutionalize long-term care by creating habilitative, social settings. The Green House Homes serve as a place where residents can receive assistance and support with activities of daily living and clinical care, without the assistance and care becoming the primary focus.

“The first Green House Homes were developed in Tupelo, Mississippi. Upon learning of this new concept, three of us visited those Green House Homes shortly after they began operating as part of a two-day workshop to introduce the Green House model,” explained Craig Ubbelohde, LHO President/CEO. “After sharing the findings with the LHO Board of Directors, the Board instructed staff to pursue this model. That included sharing the model with Wisconsin Department of Health (DHS) Administrators. DHS officials enthusiastically embraced the Green House model as it aligned with the goals for nursing homes to be smaller in size with more private rooms. Bringing the Green House model of care to Oshkosh continues LHO’s tradition of developing innovative services for the community.”

Eden Meadow’s three new buildings were developed following Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) guidelines and principles as LHO partnered with sustainable design and delivery expert Hoffman LLC. The Appleton-based Total Project Management firm provided the planning, design, and construction management services for the project.

“There was a great deal of collaboration and diversity throughout the project by Lutheran Homes of Oshkosh and Hoffman,” explained Pat Del Ponte, Hoffman director of planning services. “A holistic, integrated approach to operations, planning, design, and construction helped to create an environment of ‘home’ for the elders that will live at Eden Meadows.”

The Eden Rehabilitation Suites is designed for those needing short-term rehabilitation while recovering from knee and hip replacements, surgeries or accidents, and other illnesses resulting in hospitalization.

Following the completion of Eden Meadows, LHO will again partner with Hoffman on renovations and upgrades to Bethel Home on their original campus. Bethel Home is a skilled nursing facility that provides short-term rehabilitation services, chronic disease and conditions management for long-term care residents, specialized dementia care services, and palliative and hospice care for residents nearing the end of life.

LHO is a family of healthcare and residential service organizations committed to providing quality care and life-enriching opportunities to the aging and those in need in a caring, Christian environment since 1966.
