Dells Raceway Park: Kids Rule at Dells Raceway Park

Kids Night at Dells Raceway Park, an ASA Sanctioned track, is always an event you don’t want to miss, and this year was no exception. The night featured inflatable games and activities sponsored by Viking Village Foods and Viking Express Mart, rides in the stock cars, an on-track autograph session.

Rich Schumann Jr set was fast qualifier for the second week in a row with a time of 14.405 seconds. It was the final week of the Assembly Products Fast Dash Challenge, and due to the full field invert, Rich Schumann and Davey Pennel started from the back. Pennel, made the most of the ten laps working his way to the front of the field to challenge race leader Shayne Poenhelt. Despite heavy pressure from Pennel, Poenhelt held on to the lead and secured a place in the shootout and a win.

The Assembly Products Shoot-Out will be held next week, July 17th and will award the winner a grand prize of $1,000. The Shoot-Out will feature a field of 8 drivers based on points accumulated during the four weeks of competition and one Promoter’s Choice provisional. The top eight drivers are Rich Schumann Jr, Davey Pennel, Cardell Potter, Bobby Kendall, Corey Jankowski, Mike Lichtfeld, Mike Ehde, and Shayne Poenhelt.

In the feature event, cautions and double file restarts changed up the field and the race leaders. Steve Lichtfeld took an early lead, with Brian Hakala right behind him. Contact between Hakala and Poenhelt gave Skyler Holzhausen the opportunity to move into second, and a lap later to capture the lead from Lichtfeld. Meanwhile, fast qualifier, Rich Schumann Jr, and points leader Corey Jankowski were working their way to the front. When Holzhausen slid up coming out of turn 4, Schumann seized his opportunity and drove underneath for the lead. With 13 laps to go Schumann was leading the field until his right front tire went flat causing him to leave the track surrendering the lead to Jankowski. When the checkered flag flew, it was Jankowski who visited Victory Lane. Ed Jackson and Mike Ehde won their heat races.

In the Sportsman division, Daron Fish was fast qualifier with a time of 15.583 seconds. Denny Schott led the field to green in the feature but Ron Grabarski quickly moved to the front of the pack. While Grabarski and Schott were battling for the lead, Tuffy Myer was busy using the outside groove to move through the field. With five laps to go Schott was in the top spot with Myer right behind him. Myer snuck past Schott and claimed his first win of the season. Jeff Nehrkorn won the heat race.

During qualifying in the Pure Stock division, Dave Trute was fastest with a time of 15.925 seconds. The invert for the feature placed Sandy Cook on the pole, and she made the most of it leading 15 of the 20-lap feature. However, Brad Luck and Dave Trute used that time to make their way to the front of the field, and Luck got there first. Luck took over the lead with Trute right behind him, and this week it was Luck visiting Victory Lane and claiming the feature win. Heat race winners were Sandy Cook and Don Fasset.

Conrad Rothenburger was fastest on track during Bandit qualifying with a time of 17.614 seconds. John Preston, Kurt Kolden, and Jeremy Simmons all led the feature for a few laps but by lap 7 Arnold “Arch” Preston was at the front of the pack. Despite pressure from Simmons and Rothenburger, it was Preston that visited Victory Lane picking up his first feature win of the season. Heat race winners were Ren Revels, Gene Bialozor, and Brandon Junget.
