March, 2010, Sun Prairie, WI: Choose Hope, Inc. donated an additional $6,000 to the University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center in February, 2010. As part of an ongoing mission, Choose Hope has made donations to cancer-related organizations and research institutions consistently every month since its inception in 1999. The UW Carbone Cancer Center has received over $76,000 dollars from Choose Hope with more to come.
“Our very first donation was given to the UW Carbone Cancer Center. It wasn’t much back then, but we realized the impact that it made. That fueled us to work harder so that we could give more as a result,” says Paula Lundberg, co-owner of Choose Hope, Inc.
The UW Carbone Cancer Center is one of 40 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. It is dedicated to finding the best ways to detect, prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. To become a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, they must demonstrate reasonable depth and breadth of research activities in each of three major areas: laboratory, clinical, and population-based research, with substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas.
Craig Robida, External Relations Director of the UW Carbone Cancer Center commented, “When two of our own cancer patients (Chris McHugh and Linda Nielsen, co-owners of Choose Hope) began a friendship years ago, little did the UW Carbone Cancer Center know a new phrase, “Cancer Sucks,” and a new company, Choose Hope, Inc., would be born. The UW Carbone Cancer Center truly values its long-standing relationship with Choose Hope and its quest to offer cancer-related products, while raising awareness and funds for groundbreaking cancer research in Wisconsin and beyond.”
“We are very fortunate to have this incredible facility in our backyard,” claims Linda Nielsen, co-owner of Choose Hope. “And since both Chris and I were treated at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, it was an easy decision to partner with them from the beginning and make regular donations.”
Other donation recipients include: MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, The American Cancer Society, and Gateway for Cancer Research in Illinois.
Choose Hope, Inc. is a privately owned firm based in Sun Prairie, WI, that offers a large array of cancer awareness products and gifts for sale with a portion of the proceeds being donated to cancer research. What started as a simple mission to add some humor in the chemo room has grown into a profitable business that is making an impact in the fight against cancer.
