Sergenians wins award based on innovative green practices
Madison-based Sergenian’s Floor Covering was recently announced as Greenworks National Dealer of the Year by Mohawk Industries, one of the world’s largest floor covering manufacturers.
Sergenian’s was selected as a result of a comprehensive green program highlighted by its longstanding promise to “keep every scrap of carpet out of the landfill,” That program has diverted over 1.5 million pounds of carpet and padding from Dane County landfills since its inception in 2007.
As one of the first flooring retailers in the country to reclaim waste carpet and pad, the company reached this historic recycling level by reclaiming all commercial and residential carpet removed during the course of its business.
In only the second year of the award’s history, Sergenian’s CEO Jim Garner accepted the honor on behalf of the company – which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.
In an interview with FloorDaily.net, Garner reflected the progress of their green programs. “We started with a promise in February 1, 2007 not to put any carpet in the landfill. And we have done that.”
“Too often companies tout a green program without any third-party certification. The consumer doesn’t want ‘greenwashing’, or the appearance of doing the right thing, they actually want good things to result from green programs. Our certification does that,” added Garner later.
Another factor leading to Sergenian’s selection as the Dealer of Year was the company’s involvement as an MPower Business Champion, a City of Madison initiative designed to lessen the business’ impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions
“We are committed to creating strong, sweeping green initiatives throughout our company,” says Garner. “From little things like installing door stops for greater heating efficiency to utilizing solar panels to cut energy waste – we are evaluating everything. Our company has prospered for 80 years by working to be a leader. Sure we’ve led in flooring styles and merchandising innovation. But this award confirms that we’ve demonstrated leadership in other facets of our organization.”
