MADISON—Wisconsin biotech companies interested in attending BIO 2010 can apply for $5,000 grants through the Wisconsin Trade Project Program (WTP), Department of Commerce (Commerce) Secretary Richard J. Leinenkugel announced today. BIO 2010, the world’s largest biotechnology conference, will be held May 3-6 at McCormick Place, Chicago, IL.

“BIO 2010 offers extraordinary partnering, education, and networking opportunities,” Secretary Leinenkugel said. “This annual event is expected to draw more than 1,800 biotechnology firms focusing on every aspect of the industry. Both Governor Jim Doyle and I are attending BIO 2010, and we will do all we can to open doors for Wisconsin companies.”

BIO 2010 will feature 125 breakout sessions and presentations. It is also a gathering spot for venture capitalists, academic researchers, tech-transfer and licensing professionals, and incubator companies. Keynote events include a luncheon discussion led by former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, and a presentation by former Vice President Al Gore on climate change.

The WTP provides individual grants up to $5,000 to reimburse small Wisconsin companies for expenses incurred while attending an international trade show, such as booth rental, product literature translations, or displays. High-tech companies can also receive a grant to attend a trade show held in the U.S. that has international attendees. The program does not pay for travel, lodging, or related costs. Wisconsin companies with annual sales under $25 million are eligible for the program.
