Governor Doyle and Senator Miller Applauded for Efforts

MILWAUKEE—Wired Wisconsin, a nonprofit technology issue coalition, applauded Governor Doyle for signing Senate Bill 107 into law today, making it easier for consumers to recycling electronic waste. The coalition also praised the bipartisan support in the state legislature and the bill’s author, Senator Mark Miller (D-Monona), for his effort in passing the bill.

“We’re very pleased that Governor Doyle, Senator Miller, and the State Legislature had the foresight to provide consumers with safer options for disposing of electronic waste,” said Thad Nation, Executive Director of Wired Wisconsin.

The law, which goes into effect January 1, 2010, requires manufacturers to register with the Department of Natural Resources and take responsibility for the collection and recycling of the electronic devices, including old computers, video display devices and desktop printers.

“Our coalition has worked hard to bring greater visibility to electronic waste issues in Wisconsin, and we’re pleased that the hard work of our membership and the Legislature has paid off,” Nation said.

Wired Wisconsin will continue to educate consumers, businesses, and policy makers on the importance of responsibly recycling e-waste, and will work to bring great visibility and public support to e-waste legislation such as SB 107.
