MGE: Named a national green power leader

Madison, Wis., April 20, 2009—Madison Gas and Electric’s (MGE) Green Power Tomorrow Program has the second highest participation rate of all investor-owned utilities according to an annual assessment by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewal Energy Laboratory (NREL). MGE’s program also is ranked sixth of all utilities in green power sales as a percentage of total retail electricity sold. This ranks MGE in the “top ten” of 850 utilities included in the 2008 assessment.

The company increased wind power capacity by more than 12 times in 2008 as four new wind farms in Wisconsin and Iowa began production. MGE has more than 12,000 residential customers who have chosen to buy enough green power to offset all or a portion of the carbon dioxide emissions from their electricity use.

“With strong customer support, we have been able to achieve this leadership position in renewable energy,” said Gary Wolter, MGE chairman, president and chief executive officer. “We thank all the customers participating in our Green Power Tomorrow Program.”

NREL is the U.S. Department of Energy’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. NREL is operated for the department by the Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC.

MGE generates and distributes electricity to 137,000 customers in Dane County, Wis., and purchases and distributes natural gas to 141,000 customers in seven south-central and western Wisconsin counties. MGE’s parent company is MGE Energy (Nasdaq: MGEE). The company’s roots in the Madison area date back more than 150 years.
