UW-Madison: Law school, Thompson to host health care summit

MADISON – On Tuesday, April 7, the University of Wisconsin Law School and one of its prominent alumni – former Wisconsin governor and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson – will host “Summit Conversations on American Health Care for the 21st Century” at the Edgewater Hotel, 666 Wisconsin Ave.

It will be the third in a national series sponsored by America’s Agenda Health Care Education Fund. Among the participants will be: Wisconsin 3rd District Congressman Ron Kind; former majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Dick Gephardt; John B. Torinus Jr., chair of Serigraph Inc.; David Norton of Johnson & Johnson; Jeffrey Thompson, CEO of Gundersen Lutheran Health System; and Ann Converso, president of United American Nurses.

The moderator will be John Harwood, chief Washington correspondent for CNBC and political writer for The New York Times.

“The purpose of these summit conversations is to discuss with America’s leaders in business, labor, health care, government and other diverse sectors their visions of America’s health care future,” says Mark Blum, managing director and CEO of America’s Agenda Health Care Education Fund.

“There is mounting evidence that a new consensus is emerging about key elements of the kind of modernized 21st century health care system that America needs,” he adds.

In January, former UW-Madison chancellor and U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, now the president of the University of Miami, hosted the first summit conversations on her campus.
