One of the nation’s premier dunes ecosystems is slated for a refurbished education strategy thanks to a University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point professor.
Dennis Yockers, associate professor of environmental education at UWSP, will soon begin a sabbatical year developing a long-range updated interpretation plan for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Michigan’s Lake Michigan coast.
“As a college student at Michigan State some years ago, I first fell in love with this natural resource gem,” said Yockers. “The lakeshore desires a more modern and robust education and interpretation program which will guide them over the next decade and I am thrilled to help play a key part in this project.”
Yockers joined the UWSP faculty in 1994 with expertise in environmental education and teacher education. For almost 30 years Yockers has worked for the state of Wisconsin assisting teachers, schools, and agencies with the development and implementation of environmental education programs.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Cook College-Rutgers University, and his master’s from Montclair State University. He received his doctorate in fisheries and wildlife, with an emphasis on environmental education, from Michigan State University.
