MADISON—Governor Jim Doyle announced today that Canterbury Court, LLC, Glendale, Milwaukee County, will receive a Blight Elimination and Brownfield Redevelopment (BEBR) grant of $400,000 to help redevelop a formerly underutilized and blighted property.

“The cleanup and safe reuse of brownfield properties is about more than just renewing damaged or vacant land, it also helps spur additional reinvestment over the long haul,” Governor Doyle said. “I’m pleased to provide this grant to Canterbury Court, which will help remediate a site that will eventually provide additional housing for the community.”

Canterbury Court is a commercial and residential developer. It will construct 58 condominium units on a 7.5-acre site formerly occupied by industry in Glendale. The BEBR grant will be used for the building demolition activities and environmental remediation. Total investment is $11.6 million.

Commerce’s BEBR Program provides grant funds to municipalities, local development corporations, and the private sector to support assessment, remediation and return of contaminated lands to productive use. Brownfields are abandoned, idle, or underused industrial or commercial properties where redevelopment is hindered by real or perceived contamination.
