Pioneering Safe Medication Return Initiative Reviewed During Pharmaceutical Disposal Summit

Capital Returns, Inc., a GENCO Supply Chain Solutions’ company, to present details of the nation’s first-of-its-kind safe medicine disposal pilot during U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (Region III) Pharmaceutical Disposal Summit in Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA, June 5 /PRNewswire/ — Capital Returns, Inc. (CRI), the pharmaceutical industry’s leading processor of pharmaceutical returns, today announced that attendees at the Philadelphia area regional Pharmaceutical Disposal Summit will get a first look at a consumer medication return pilot program launched last month in a two-county area in Wisconsin. Sponsored by excelleRx and U.S. EPA Region III, the summit will include environmental and pharmaceutical executives who were invited to meet today in Philadelphia to discuss the critical issues surrounding pharmaceuticals in the environment.

CRI is set to brief attendees on “Get The Meds Out,” the pioneering joint effort between the University of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and CRI.

The pilot program involves more than 500,000 potential participants in a two-county area. Consumers in Waukesha and Winnebago counties can call a special 800 number to receive a pre-paid shipping label. CRI will handle the calls, explain the process, provide a return authorization and send out a pre-paid label for the expired or unused medications, excluding controlled substances. Once consumers receive their pre-paid labels, they package their medicines for shipment back to CRI. Packages received by CRI are processed, separated and then disposed of through incineration. The entire process is free to consumers.

A research report published by the U.S. Geological Survey, determined that pharmaceuticals have been detected in multiple waterways throughout the U.S.

As the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency begins its attempt to modify regulations that would potentially clear the way for more national and statewide medicine take-back programs, the significance of this first-of-its-kind pilot is already being established.

“We are honored to be invited to present our solution to pharmaceutical leaders here in Philadelphia,” says Mary Hendrickson, director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs for CRI. “The Get The Meds Out program is creating national attention that will only help advance consumer understanding of the issue and ease the creation of a national medication return program in the future.”
