PSC Issues Draft Environmental Impact Statement

MADISONThe Public Service Commission (PSC), the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have prepared a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for a proposed coal-fire power plant in Wisconsin and are seeking public input.

Alliant Energy has filed an application with the PSC for authority to construct a new 300 megawatt coal-fired electric generation facility at the existing Nelson Dewey Generating Station in Cassville, Grant County.  Alliant Energy has also identified the Columbia Energy Center, near Portage in Columbia County as a possible alternate site for the proposed power plant.

The draft EIS is a thorough study of the proposed project, outlining the potential for environmental, community and public health impacts.  All public comments on the draft EIS will be considered when drafting the final EIS.  Members of the public are encouraged to use the final EIS to help prepare for the public hearings scheduled for later this year.

To review the report, it may be accessed at the PSC’s website at http://psc.wi.gov. To view the documents, click on the Electronic Regulatory Filing System (ERF) and enter docket number 6680-CE-170.

Alliant Energy’s application is also available at local libraries, and at the offices of the clerks of the municipalities and towns in the two possible project areas.  Printed copies of the draft EIS are available upon request by calling: 608-266-5481
