Governor Doyle Announces Funding for Senior Center and Library in Ashland County

MADISON— Governor Jim Doyle announced today that the City of Mellen, Ashland County, will receive a $200,000 grant from the Community Development Block Grant–Public Facilities (CDBG-PF) program of the Department of Commerce (Commerce) to fund its senior center and library project.

“Investing in area development projects is important because it allows city residents to take full advantage of public resources and come together as a community,” Governor Doyle said. “We must continue our support for projects like this that will improve overall community development.”

The City of Mellen is building a 3,300-sq.-ft. senior center and library. The senior center will offer more programs and services for seniors and will have the capability to serve 100 meals per day. The library will have more storage space for books and better public access to computers. Total project cost is $400,000.

CDBG-PF grants play an important role in helping communities finance a wide range of projects designed to enhance the economic vitality of the community through the provision of community infrastructure, the expansion of tax base, job creation, and increased private investment in downtowns.
