Governor Doyle Names John Drew and Betty Womack to the Board of Regents

Also Reappoints Danae Davis to the UW System Governing Body


 


Governor Jim Doyle today announced the appointments of John Drew and Betty Womack to the University of Wisconsin System’s Board of Regents.  The appointment of Betty Womack is effective immediately and the appointment of John Drew is effective June 1, 2008.  Both terms will expire May 1, 2014.  The Governor also reappointed Danae Davis for a term to expire May 1, 2011.


 


“Betty Womack and John Drew will be great additions to the Board of Regents – each with unique perspectives on education,” Governor Doyle said.  “Now more than ever, our University System needs people who are committed to maintaining and strengthening the educational values of this state.”


 


John Drew, 55, is a Regional Representative for the United Auto Workers in Southeast Wisconsin and is a former autoworker at the Chrysler Plant in Kenosha where he served as local union President 


 


“John Drew’s work with both the UAW and the University System will be an asset to the Board,” Governor Doyle said.


 


Drew has previously worked as a part-time instructor at UW-Milwaukee and as Adjunct Faculty for the University of Wisconsin-Extension School for Workers. He has served on the Governor’s Task Force for Educational Excellence and is a member of the NAACP. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Antioch University and his Masters degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Drew and his wife, Lauren Baker, live in Milwaukee and have one son, Nick, who is attending UW-Madison.


 


“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve on the Board of Regents and appreciate the confidence Governor Doyle has placed in me,” Drew said.


 


Dr. Betty Womack is an Assistant Superintendent at the Kettle Moraine School District and is a former high school principal in the district. 


 


“Betty Womack has years of experience as a well-respected educator that will serve the University System well,” Governor Doyle said. “She has worked with Wisconsin students of all ages, and I value the perspective she will bring to the board.


 


Womack has previously worked at the Nicolet Union High School District and as an Adjunct Professor at Cardinal Stritch University.  In 2007, Betty and her husband received the Service to Wisconsin Award from the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators.  Betty is a former member of the Higher Educational Aids Board, the National Merit Scholarship Selection Committee, and the Wisconsin ACT Advisory Board.  She has a Master of Education Degree in Educational Psychology and a Doctorate of Education Degree in Learning and Service.  Betty and her husband, the Reverend Doctor Rolen Womack, live in Brown Deer.


 


“It is an exciting time to be engaged in the postsecondary arena,” Womack said.  “I am certain that I can provide a unique and hopefully valuable perspective.  I am grateful for the opportunity and honored to serve in making Wisconsin a better place to live, learn and grow for everyone.”


 


Danae Davis, 52, has served on the Board of Regents since 2003 and is the Executive Director of PEARLS for Teen Girls in Milwaukee.  She graduated from UW-Oshkosh in 1977 and received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1980. Davis and her son live in Milwaukee.
