After years of planning by students and administrators, months of construction and closed facilities and weeks of moving out then back in, the newly remodeled Dreyfus University Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point will re-open on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, followed by six weeks of television-themed festivities.

All of the Dreyfus University Center services, from its new dining area, hair salon and student organization offices to the University Store, Basement Brewhaus and administrative offices, will be open for business for the first time on the first day of the spring semester. The building will be open to the public from 7 a.m. to midnight on January 22, with a unique grand re-opening ceremony at 3 p.m. at the front entrance on Reserve Street.

The first week of re-opening festivities will be themed around Reality TV. The second week, starting January 28, is based on Educational TV and includes a lecture by Dave Coleman. Week three, Music TV, will include several concerts during the week of February 4-9. A dance is planned during week four, February 11-15, under the theme Entertainment News. Week five, February 18-22, is Sitcom TV and features a comedian. The final week, February 25-29, will feature Game Shows.

The campus got a sneak peek at the Dreyfus Center during its soft opening, which began December 10. Already there is excitement in the students’ faces as they enter the building, says Laura Ketchum-Ciftci, the center’s director.

“Students are already using the new areas of the Dreyfus University Center as we hoped, and as more students come inside it will again become the community center of the campus,” she said. “We have appreciated the campus’ patience during the past 18 months of construction, and we look forward to seeing everyone enjoy the renovated building.”

“The Dreyfus University Center is one of the campus’s greatest resources,” said Chancellor Linda Bunnell. “The new Dreyfus Center will provide even more opportunities for students to build relationships, participate in educational experiences outside the classroom and grow as leaders. The community will be able to continue to use the Dreyfus University Center as a place to hold events, share a meal with friends and take in quality entertainment.”

In the works since 1996 and financed entirely through student fees, the $23.7 million project has added more than 40,000 square feet to the Dreyfus University Center, updated and created energy efficient electrical and mechanical systems, modernized its facilities and added more student spaces.
