WisBusiness: Revenue secretary targets ‘tax gap’

Assembly Republicans showed no appetite for the Streamlined Sales Tax initiative after nixing it from the version of the budget they approved. But Gov. Jim Doyle’s revenue secretary, Roger Ervin, remains confident the project will soon become law.

Ervin, who has talked openly about Wisconsin’s “tax gap,” said revenue agencies across the country continually struggle with keeping their tax laws up to date. He says Wisconsin is no different and expects a series of recommendations after his department finishes a study trying to pinpoint the tax gap, which some have estimated could be as big as $6 billion.
