MADISON, Wis. – Cancer research at the University of Wisconsin and Carbone Cancer Center got a big boost Sunday when more than 1,200 bike riders took to the beautiful roads of eastern Dane County to raise money for cancer research.

The Ride 2017 featured 1,244 registered riders who raised more than $300,000 for cancer research, doubling the total from the first year of the event. Among the riders were 325 cancer patients and their families and friends, as well as UW faculty, researchers, physicians and more. The event was staffed by over 200 volunteers.

“We would like to thank everyone for coming out for a wonderful day that focuses on cancer patients and families. Our mission is to accelerate cancer cures by funding promising research,” says Dr. Deric Wheeler, associate professor of human oncology and director of The Ride.

The UW Department of Human Oncology created The Ride to fund advances in cancer research and treatment that improve outcomes for patients. Dollars are returned rapidly to support cutting-edge research and programs in the form of Ride Scholar Awards and Scholarships. Six talented recipients were funded in 2016 and more will be selected in 2017 reflecting the growing success of The Ride.
