Exhibits by Shane Walsh and William Darling Open November 5

Thelma Sadoff Center for the Arts (THELMA) announced exhibits by William Darling and Shane Walsh will open November 5 with a free artist’s reception from 5 to 8 pm.

“Both Shane and Will represent the very best of the Wisconsin Arts Scene,” said Kevin Miller, THELMA Executive Director. “We look forward to sharing their outstanding work with the Fond du Lac community. I hope art enthusiasts from across the state will take time to visit THELMA and see what Shane and Will have in store.”

Walsh’s exhibit, Appetite for Construction, is the result of his research and involvement with the study of collage.

“This is a brand new body of paintings that I’m excited to show for the first time and am equally thrilled that THELMA and the Fond du Lac community will be the first audience to see them,” Walsh said.

Walsh makes paintings that reference digital and analog forms of representation – Photoshop, commercial printing – and combines these with the signs and symbols of 20th century abstraction.

Walsh is a Lecturer in Painting and Drawing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He received his BFA from MIAD and his MFA from the University of Washington in Seattle.

William Darling describes his artwork as abstract expressionism, a movement in American painting, developed in New York in the 1940s. This style became famous through artists like Franz Kline or Jackson Pollock.

“Art to me is meditative and spiritual,” Darling said. “It’s a connection to something greater that is hard to explain. It’s a feeling that I search for. That safe place that is magical.”

Darling is the son of State Sen. Alberta Darling. He lives in Chicago.

“From the second I walked in THELMA I knew I wanted my art there,” Darling said. “It has a vibe, a flow wonderful natural light. It’s the perfect place for any one’s work to been seen. I am lucky and blessed.”

You can view Darling’s Exhibit, Seeking the Hidden Flow, and Walsh’s Exhibit until January 9, 2016.
