Blackhawk Technical College: Employability conference to host nationally recognized speakers

JANESVILLE, WI – Blackhawk Technical College will hold its second annual Employability Conference on Saturday, Nov. 8, featuring two familiar and popular speakers, Alonzo Kelly and Michael Miller.

The event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Commons of BTC’s Central Campus, provides talks and activities focusing on the skills needed today to gain meaningful employment. The conference is free and open to the public.

Kelly, an expert on leadership development, strategic planning and professional goal achievement, will open the conference with an address aimed at how the individual can take control of his or her own professional journey.

Miller, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, will open the afternoon session reviewing the six steps of problem solving, an hour-long session that will include a team problem solving exercise.

Kelly is a popular speaker at postsecondary schools and has made many appearances at Blackhawk and other Wisconsin Technical College System schools. He formed the Kelly Leadership Group in 2009, an organization that serves individuals and businesses in personal and professional development.

Following his keynote remarks, Kelly will moderate a session focusing on different methods of communication and how to distinguish between intent and interpretation in those different forms of communication.

Miller has spent most of the past two decades working in postsecondary settings in a variety of student service positions, He also has contributed to the book, “Lessons From the Road: Inspirational Insights by Leading Speakers in higher Education’’ and co-authored “The Now Factors of College Success.’’

In a morning session, Miller will moderate a discussion and activities on ways to overcome the negatives of disagreement and how to turn conflict into a positive. Two other afternoon breakout sessions will deal with a practical approach to problem solving and staying resilient in the face of discouraging results. Lunch will be served.
