Brenda Sunby to be presented with the prestigious Mentor Award by the Association for Women Lawyers

Wausau, Wis. – Brenda Sunby, an attorney working in the Wausau, Rhinelander, and Stevens Point offices of Habush Habush & Rottier, S.C., is the recipient of this year’s prestigious Mentor Award, given by the Association for Women Lawyers (AWL) to one outstanding female attorney in the state of Wisconsin each year. Among many nominations, Sunby was selected for her contribution to the advancement of women in the legal profession, including the development of women lawyers, promotion of the legal interests of women, honor and integrity of the legal profession, and her commitment to advancing justice for all. Sunby will be presented with her award at a ceremony to be held September 28 at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee, Wis.

“Brenda stands out among other attorneys for having exceptional integrity and ethical standards,” said Robert L. Habush, President of Habush Habush and Rottier. “Her dedication to the legal trade is an inspiration to young women lawyers throughout the state, and in the legal field in general.”

Among Sunby’s most notable accomplishments that led to her selection as the Mentor Award winner was her instrumental work in establishing the Wisconsin Association for Justice Women’s Caucus (Women’s Caucus). She has served as both vice chair and chair of the organization. In her leadership role with the Women’s Caucus, Sunby has led many impressive efforts that include establishing a mentor program for women law students, creating a program that provides young women lawyers a chance to practice public speaking skills, and developing maternity leave guidelines that were circulated to all Chief Judges around the state.

“This award means a great deal to me, because I believe so strongly in solid mentorship,” said Sunby. “Early on in my career, I had an excellent mentor whose philosophy was to take me into the shallow end and push me just enough until I could swim in the deep end. Now I am at the point where I am able to share my skills with young women lawyers without pushing them too far, or too quickly, helping them to become confident, talented attorneys.”

Sunby currently sits on the board for the Wisconsin Association of Justice, participating as a member of the American Association for Justice. She also serves as a trustee for the Wisconsin Civil Justice Education Foundation, and is an active member of the Portage County Bar Association. She also serves as a profile writer for the AWL. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Marquette University, her law degree from The John Marshall School of Law, and has been practicing with Habush Habush & Rottier since 2000. She resides in Wausau with her husband and two daughters.
