(BARABOO, Wis.)—A preliminary study conducted by SpecPro, Inc., for the U.S. Army at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant (BAAP) determined that a public water system would be the most cost-effective and best solution for ensuring clean water for the residents in portions of the Towns of Sumpter, Prairie du Sac, and Merrimac.

“Our goal is to make sure residents of the area always have safe drinking water,” Joan Kenney, BAAP’s commander’s representative, said. “A public water system would not only provide access to clean water, but also enhance public safety.”

Currently, the Army has SpecPro testing the groundwater and monitoring the neighboring homes around BAAP every quarter for chemicals of concern such as solvents and dinitrotoluene (DNT). SpecPro also operates treatment plants that capture water on the western portion of the installation. These are not viable options for the indefinite future, according to Kenney.

The proposed public water system would draw water from the deep sandstone aquifer into a 75,000-gallon water tower and allow for the creation of a fire hydrant system. The Army will work closely with area residents, community leaders and elected officials to develop the project and help form a water district.

Once approved by the towns, the public water system would take approximately three years to construct. More information can be found at SpecPro’s website, http://www.cleanwaterwelldone.com.
