WHITEWATER University of Wisconsin-Whitewater training programs in safety and health for state construction workers will be held this summer and fall in surburban Milwaukee and Green Bay.

The Heartland Safety and Health Education Center, a joint project of UW-Whitewater and Indiana University at Bloomington, provide training programs for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The center is one of eight selected in 2008 by OSHA in a national competition and is the first of its kind in Wisconsin.

E. Andrew Kapp, associate director of the Heartland OSHA Training Institute and Education Center, says the courses are popular with Wisconsin businesses for several reasons.

“Businesses don’t have to participate in these training programs, but they are a good deal,” he explained. “I’ve yet to see an accident that costs less than it would cost to prevent it from happening in the first place. And our instructors come from the workplace, so they can provide first-hand knowledge of what skills are most needed.”

Kapp said his department was contacted by Indiana University a couple of years ago to participate in the Heartland Center primarily because of UW-Whitewater¹s long history in occupational health and safety. Together, the educational institutions provide a program that covers the need of OSHA Region V, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
