The dean of UW-Madison’s College of Engineering and a veteran business leader will talk about private industry partnerships with the college, current and future, at the Tuesday, June 23 luncheon meeting of the Wisconsin Innovation Network in Madison.
The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive. Dean Paul Peercy will discuss the growing ties between the College of Engineering and Wisconsin business and industry, including the college’s efforts to meet continuing education needs and to confront a coming shortage of engineers. Madison consultant John Nelson, the former CEO of Affiliated Engineers, will discuss how emerging challenges such as sustainability and green design principles require a new kind of thinking in the field.
The UW-Madison College of Engineering has 15 industry consortia in areas as diverse as Fly Ash Use, Diesel Emissions Reduction, Ergonomics Design, Industrial Refrigeration, Power Systems, Quick Response Manufacturing, Advanced Materials, e-Business, Power Electronics, Plasma Processing and Small Engines. It is also home to more than 40 research centers in areas ranging from nanotechnology to robotics and water science. Peercy will describe how businesses are working through those programs.
During the 2007 federal fiscal year, UW-Madison College of Engineering faculty, staff and students made 150 invention disclosures through the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, with 88 U.S. patent applications filed and 31 patents issued. For eight consecutive years, the college has reported more than 100 patent disclosures. This innovation is a major reason why the UW-Madison was the nation’s second-largest research institution in terms of sponsored research spending ($913 million; National Science Foundation reports) during that fiscal year.
