BELOIT, Wis. – For the third consecutive year, ABC Supply Co. Inc. has been honored with the Gallup Great Workplace Award. The company is one of only 23 companies in the world to receive the 2009 award.

The Gallup Great Workplace Awards, which were announced in Washington D.C. Thursday, recognize the best-performing workforces in the world and are based on the most rigorous workplace research ever conducted. Companies considered for this award were evaluated by a panel of workplace experts, who compared each company’s results to those of thousands of work teams all over the world, using Gallup’s massive data base.

ABC Supply is among the winners because its results demonstrate that the company has one of the most productive and engaged workforces in the world. Other 2009 winners include such familiar names as The Campbell Soup Company and Marriott Vacation Club International, both of which are also three-time winners. ABC Supply is the largest wholesale distributor of roofing in the United States and one of the nation’s largest distributors of siding, windows and other select exterior building products.

“In today’s challenging economic environment, it is deeply gratifying for ABC Supply to be recognized once again as a great place to work,” said David Luck, chief executive officer and president of ABC Supply. “This award really belongs to our 5,600 associates who have stayed focused on helping our customers succeed by treating them with respect and making it easy for them to do their jobs.

“Since the very beginning, the vision of our founders, Ken and Diane Hendricks, has been that ABC Supply would become the best company in America to work for,” Luck said. “That vision has remained unchanged throughout ABC Supply’s 27-year history. These three consecutive Great Workplace awards honor our associates’ continuing high levels of engagement and ongoing commitment to Ken and Diane’s vision and mission.”

“In good times, employee engagement is the difference between being good and being great, and in bad times, it’s the difference between surviving and not,” said James K. Harter, Ph.D., Gallup’s chief scientist of workplace management and well-being and coauthor of 12: The Elements of Great Managing. “In good times and bad, low engagement reduces performance and profit. And under the current circumstances, many companies can’t afford to let those drop.

“Gallup is honored to recognize these organizations that continue to excel in engaging their workforce, even during our current global economic challenge,” Harter continued.

The Gallup Great Workplace Award is based on multiple criteria, including response rates, overall engagement levels, and evidence of engagement impact on performance. Applicants’ results are compared across Gallup’s renowned workplace research database composed of millions of work teams in more than 150 countries. A panel of workplace experts reviews each organization’s portfolio, which includes quantitative and qualitative components.

The awards will be presented at the Gallup Summit 2009, which will take place April 28-30 in Omaha, Neb. During the Summit, Great Workplace Award winners will present the best practices they applied to their workplaces and discuss the improved business results they achieved through building an engaged workforce.

Founded in 1982 and headquartered in Beloit, Wis., ABC Supply operates nearly 380 branches in 45 states and the District of Columbia. The company has distinguished itself by following a single, simple guiding principle – take care of contractors better than any other distributor by understanding their businesses and offering products and services carefully selected to meet their unique needs.
