MADISON – Electronic filing for individual income
tax returns increased this year over last, Department of Revenue (DOR) officials announced at events this week throughout the state.  With just days left to file before the deadline, the e-file rate stands at 71%, up 3% over this time last time.

“E-filing is the easiest, most secure way to file tax returns, which more and more taxpayers are experiencing each year,” said Revenue Secretary Roger Ervin.  “As the deadline approaches, I encourage those taxpayers who haven’t yet filed to join the more than two-thirds of Wisconsin citizens who have benefited from the quick refunds and low error rates that e-filing offers.”

At this point in the season, those who file on paper can expect a wait of approximately 10 weeks for a refund.  Refunds from e-filed returns are available in about five business days, deposited directly to a checking or savings account.

E-filing is available through DOR’s “Free-File” software, through off-the-shelf products and private vendor websites, through professional tax preparers, and at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across the state.  Many VITA sites are extending hours in the days leading up to April 15.

Secretary Ervin also shared successes of this year’s income tax processing season, including fewer errors on paper returns, improved customer service response, and implementation of

recommendations developed following last year’s season.
