Lands’ End Keeps Kids Safe and Warm With Style This Winter

Tips for functional fashion for school and play

DODGEVILLE, Wis., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ — According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines on winter weather and safety, children should not only dress warmly, but also stay dry to avoid exposure to cold temperatures and avoid emergencies such as hypothermia and frost bite this winter season. Lands’ End is releasing five easy tips for parents to help protect their kids from the sub-zero temperatures and avoid wintertime injuries.

“At Lands’ End, we offer a full range of functional and fashionable outerwear options for kids from size 2t to 20. Each coat has an exclusive, designated temperature rating to guide parents to select a coat that meets the climate conditions their children will be exposed to,” said Todd Christiansen, Lands’ End Kids outerwear manager. “Lands’ End’s extensive outerwear collection enables parents to keep kids warm and dry at an affordable price and takes the worry away.”

Tip 1: Look for a strong outer layer

Look for a tightly woven outer layer when selecting a winter coat. Specifically, look for jackets with strong, wind resistant shells to reduce the heat loss caused by extreme winds. Lands’ End has exclusive temperature ratings on all kids’ outerwear and icons showing whether each jacket is windproof, water resistant or waterproof, making it easy to find the right outerwear for kids.

Tip 2: Stay dry with water resistant boots

Look for fashionable water resistant winter boots to keep your child’s feet dry and warm. A wide selection of Lands’ End snow boots are antimicrobial to fight odor, are water/wear resistant, have at least 400 grams of insulation to fight the cold, and are available with 360 degree reflective trim for added safety. They also feature a gripping sole to avoid slipping when there is ice on the ground.

Tip 3: Add extra warmth with next-to-skin layers

Staying warm in frigid temperatures starts with a base layer. Add extra layers to keep your child warm when it’s time for snow day play. Lands’ End Thermaskins pull moisture away from the skin to keep kids warm and dry. The synthetic fabric also dries quickly, which is a huge advantage over cotton long johns.

Tip 4: Protect the extremities

Most of a child’s body heat is lost through their uncovered head and other extremities, so teach children to wear their hats, gloves and scarves for ultimate protection. Choose coordinating accessories that are soft against the skin, but are durable, made from materials such as merino wool, nylon and microfleece. Select nylon/fleece lined gloves and hats for the ultimate protection during severe weather.

Tip 5: Know the school requirements

Ask your child’s teacher what the expectations are for recess play during winter weather. At some schools, snow pants must be worn whereas other schools only require a winter coat, accessories and snow boots. Choose snow pants with reinforced knee patches and scuff guards for durability along with easy-on features for children to dress themselves.
